It has its roots in many old festivals. ‘Easter’ not the Christmas was the main festival of Christian in the early years of Christianity. There is no mention of the birth date of Christ in Bible. Birth of Jesus was not celebrated in Christianity. It was Church, which decided to celebrate the Birth of Jesus. Pope Julius-I, declared December 25 as the birth date of Christ and it became the Christmas. Old traditions of Yule, Pagan and Saturnalia were adopted in Christmas celebrations.
Scandinavia, celebrated a festival called Yule from December 21 to January. The festival was celebrated for the coming of Sun in the winters. People would bring logs and burn it in their house. Festivity would continue until the log burned out. Europeans considered winter as the best time to celebrate. Winter was only time when meat was available in huge amounts. Many animals were slaughtered during this time for the feast. It was another way to get rid of extra animals as feeding them in winter time was a problem and meat remained fresh during winter time. Roman celebrated a festival called Saturnalia to honour the Suturn. In this festival social order was turned upside down and slaves were treated as masters. German celebrated a festival to honour the Pagan God in winters they believed that Pagan God Oden visited them through the sky and observed his people. In his visits he would decide to bless or punish people accordingly.

Christmas has become a very popular festival. All over the world, devoted Christians celebrate this day as the birthday of Jesus. However, Christmas continued to develop and with time it included many more traditions and customs. Modern Christmas has spread its wings and it is more like a social festival. Commercialization has given it a new meaning and popularity.
