Introduction |
| The most prestigious and the oldest tennis event, Wimbledon was first played under the control of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in 1877. They moved to their present locale, a new ground near Wimbledon, a suburb of London in 1922. It is the only Grand Slam to be played on grass. However, other three grand slams too were once played on grass. The French Open adopted clay and the Australian and US Open turned towards hard court. The event comprises of five events: Men's singles, Women's singles, Men's doubles, Women's doubles and Mixed Doubles. |

| Winner of the men's category receives a silver gilt cup and a monetary prize of US $1,287,469. The women champion receives a silver tray and US $1,228,501 as prize money. Men have always been awarded a higher sum than their female counterparts. The issue took the form of a controversy during the 2006 championship. The problem was resolved and it was announced in February 2007 that the prize money from now on would be the same at all levels. |

Trivia |
- The Grand Slam has a strict dress code prescribed for the players. All players are required to dress only in white. Such a rule is only followed by Wimbledon.
- This year the Grand Slam would become the first to witness the use of Gold racquets. Sisters Serena Williams and Venus Williams will be using gold rackets in this edition of Wimbledon.
- It is the only Grand Slam where spectators can avail tickets on the day of play. They are available for Centre Court, Court1 and Court2.
