| Lucknow: HuJI activist Waliullah was convicted by a Lucknow court in the 2006 Varanasi blasts that claimed nearly 70 lives and sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment. Additional District and Sessions Judge Shamsher Chandra Tripathi sentenced Waliullah under the Arms and Unlawful Activities Act and also slapped a fine of Rs 1.05 lakh on him. He was also awarded three years imprisonment by the court for possessing illegal arms. Both the terms will run concurrently.
According to prosecution, Waliullah was arrested on April 5, 2006 under Gosainganj police station of Lucknow and a foreign made pistol along with RDX recovered from him. A case was later registered against him in this regard. The Court, while awarding the punishment, acquitted him from charges of waging war against the Government due to lack of evidence. Around 70 people were killed and more than 100 injured in the blasts that took place outside the Sankatmochan temple and the railway station in Varanasi at around 6.30 pm in March 2006. (PTI) |
