Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today to seek his help in mitigating the problems of flood-affected people of north Bihar districts. The chief minister, in an address broadcast by radio on Tuesday appealed to the affected people to evacuate to safer places saying it was not a normal flood but a catastrophe caused by Kosi river known as the 'Sorrow of Bihar'.

Cabinet and Coordination Secretary Girish Shanker told reporters after the cabinet meeting that Kumar decided to call on the Prime Minister and seek the Centre's help to provide relief and evacuate over 12 lakh people trapped in the bed of Kosi which has changed its course at Kushah village in Nepal.

The cabinet secretary said that Kumar has convened an all-party meeting on August 29 to discuss threadbare how the people of north Bihar - particularly of Supaul, Madhepura and Araria - could be evacuated safely and relief materials provided to them.

"The chief minister told the meeting that it is a daunting task to evacuate such a large number of people and providing them relief materials" and sought the help of opposition parties in dealing with the situation. "At this hour of crisis, we should not indulge in blamegame and initiate collective measures to provide succour to flood affected people," Kumar was quoted as saying. (PTI)
