| New Delhi: Human Rights belongs to everyone and suspected terrorists equally deserve human rights, feels Baroness Vivien Stern, honorary president of Penal Reforms International, UK. Stern is in India as the chief guest of a two day 'Workshop on Detention' conducted by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
Speaking exclusively to Headlines India, Baroness said, "Do not defeat terrorists by abolishing the role of law. Terrorism is a terrible evil but we have to deal with them as criminal act and it is applicable equal to the suspected terrorists."
Justice S Rajendra Babu, Chairman of NHRC voiced similar thoughts. On the eve of NHRC's fifteenth Foundation Day, Justice Babu said that NHRC has about one lakh cases registered and about 63,000 of them are under trial. But fast disposition of cases is possible only when different state authorities render support, he said.
Babu said, "NHRC supports people, who are in difficulty. What we have found in Gujarat and Nandigram violence is that it has always been the poor people who suffered." However, on Batla House encounter, he said, "We have asked the Commissioner of Police to submit the report within 10 days, the report is expected by Monday or Tuesday." |
