Dhyan Chand :

The name Dhyan Chand is synonymous with Indian hockey. His seniors in the British Indian Army first noticed Dhyan Chand’s magic with the hockey stick. He soon got selected in the Indian national team. Dhyan Chand represented India in three Olympics and hypnotized the world with his skill. At the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics Dhyan Chand's endowment was there for all to see. India beat US by 24 goals to one, Dhyan Chand scoring 8 goals in the process. He led India to a gold in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. In all, he won three Olympic gold medals. Seeing Dhyan Chand in action, people at times could not believe their eyes. Infact, his stick was broken in Holland to assure that there was no foul play. A statue of Dhyan Chand with four hands and four sticks is put up at the Vienna Sports Club A Padma Bhushan awardee, his birthday which falls on August 29, 1905. The day is observed as the 'National Sports Day' in India.

Balbir Singh :

Balbir Singh was a part of the illustrious period of Indian hockey. He was a member of the Olympic Champion Indian team of 1948, 1952 and 1956. He holds a distinction of being the first hockey player to be awarded with the Padma Shri. A penalty circle specialist, Balbir Singh Sr. was one of the best Centre forwards the Indian team has ever seen. Balbir was also a member of the victorious squad that brought home the Asian Games silver medal in 1958 as well as in 1962. After bidding goodbye to the game, Balbir became the team manager of the Indian team & helped it win the silver medal in the 1971 World Cup and also the gold in the 1975 version of it.

K. D. Singh Babu :

Kunwar Digvijay Singh made an exceptional name for himself in the field. Digvijay’s teammates called him "Babu" for his talent and skill. He got into the national team & became a key player. After getting into the national team, K. D. Singh toured Kenya, the then British East Africa, Uganda, and Tanzania in 1947 with the Indian hockey team under hockey maestro Dhyan Chand and established his reputation as a productive goal-scorer. Independent India's first gold came in the 1948 London Olympics. Singh was the vice-captain of that side. He led India to a gold medal at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. In 1960, Kunwar Digvijay Singh was presented with the Padma Shri award to become the second Padma Shri hockey player after Balbir Singh Senior.

Ajit Pal Singh :

Ajit Pal Singh was a prominent centre-half of the Indian hockey team. He made his international debut in 1966. In 1967, he played in the Pre-Olympic tournament in London. Subsequently, he was picked up for the 1968 Mexico Olympics. He was also named captain of the 1976 Indian team. Ajit Pal led the team to the silver medal in the1974 Teheran Asian Games. The highlight of Ajit Pal's career was the 1975 World Cup which was the country's first World Cup triumph.

Udham Singh :

Born on August 4, 1928, Udham Singh is one of the best players to have played for the country. He was a constituent of the 1952 Helsinki and 1956 Melbourne Olympics, both falling in India's lap. Udham Singh made his last appearance at the Olympics in 1964 Tokyo games. Apart from Leslie Claudius, Udham is the only player to have won 3 Olympic gold and one silver medal. He was presented with the Arjuna Award in 1965. He coached the 1967 Olympic silver winning team and the 1970 Bangkok Asian Games champion.
