Classes commence at IIT Patna

Patna: Classes begin in the city branch of Indian Institute of Technology today with students from across the country joining the first batch of the much talked about institution. The formal inauguration of the institute was to be done by Union Minister for Human Resource and Development Arjun Singh but he couldn't turn up following which the inauguration has been extended for further date.

The classes of the institution are being conducted at the three-storeyed make-shift building on the Patliputra Government Polytechnic campus. The Patna institute will function as an extension centre of IIT, Guwahati, said the official sources. "The Centre has approved the proposed permanent site for IIT at Bihta on the outskirts of Patna," state Principal Secretary (science and technology), A V Chaturvedi said, adding that once the construction is over the classes will be shifted to the proposed building.

Gautam Barua of IIT Guwahati said, "The classes has begin at the IIT Patna. The institute will be provided with all the facility that are available in Guwahati branch. I wish the students all the best." The Dean of IIT Patna Samarendra said, he is hopeful that the student of the new institute will excel in their career and make the nation proud.

Most of the students enrolled in the Oriental Programme are from Hyderabad and Haryana. "I am very happy on being in Bihar. People here in the state are very talented and kind," said Vandana, who hails from Haryana.
