New Delhi: Students' Union of Jawaharlal Nehru University has called off its indefinite strike as it reached an agreement with the university administration on Wednesday. The JNUSU was agitating over filling up backlog seats belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes in admissions and had some grievances over the policy adopted by JNU on this issue.

According to the agreement, a copy of which is with Headlines India, the university would appoint a time-bound committee of experts to look into all issues pertaining to OBC admission procedures and processes. The committee would also examine the position as expressed in the office memorandum issued by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and Supreme Court judgment. The JNUSU can raise its concerns with the committee as it would also be a part of it.

Giving the details of the agreement, Dean of Students' Welfare V K Jain told Headlines India that JNU would also formulate another committee for examining or reviewing the entire admission policy and procedures with special emphasis to the shortfall in intake of unreserved seats and categories including SC, ST, OBC and Physically Challenged.

"These committees will study the demands and realities and submit its findings before the Academic Council, the supreme decision making body of the university. Any final decision in this regard will be taken after that," said V K Jain.

The university also agreed to carry forward the vacant seats in each categories to the next year's admission provided the Academic Council approves it. This demand was the main bone of contention between JNUSU and the university administration as during the academic year 2008, JNU had witnessed shortfall in admissions against the intake approved by the Council.
