Kumartuli has a 3000-plus population

The almost 3,000-strong population of Kumartuli survives through the year on the income generated through these idols that they make for Durga Puja every year. As Babu Pal explains, the history of Kumartuli dates back to almost 200 years. The artists from Krishnanagar in Nadia who used to come to Kolkata for making idols, gradually settled in the city, and thus began this establishment called Kumartuli.
