Ghaziabad/New Delhi: Indian Air Force today inducted the indigenously built 3-dimensional Surveillance Radar 'Rohini' in its inventory. In a function held at the Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) unit in Ghaziabad, Chairman and Managing Director, V V R Sastry handed over the keys of the radar to Air Chief Marshal, Fali Homi Major.
The state of the art multifunction medium range 'Rohini' is a mobile surveillance radar capable of handling multiple targets simultaneously in the 'Track While Scan (TWS) Mode'. The radar meets all the requirements effectively and operates in S-band of airborne targets up to 150 Kilometres.
Briefing media persons, Air Chief Marshal F H Major said that 'Rohini' is a central activation three dimensional radar, which is a product of great research and lot of hard work.
"The Indian Air Force is immensely satisfied with the Radar. We have carried out extensive trials and it has met all our requirements. It has scope for further exploitation, which our scientists and air force team would sit down and consider," remarked Major.

Earlier, Sastry said, "It is a historic day for radar technology. It is a joint effort of the trinity of Defence. Even Army and Navy has got attracted to this radar. We are developing futuristic radar mainly Weapon Locating Radar, Battery Loaded Radar and many others. The futuristic radars will be high tech MVR radars."
Meanwhile, responding on whether women be commissioned in the force, Major said, "Girls are doing very well in the Air Force. I am sure they will do well, whether it is short service commission or permanent commission. As far as Air Force is concerned, I have no problem in inducting them," replied Major.
