| After a dismal performance against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final, Team
India is all set to to take their challenge again in the three test and five
ODI series of the Idea Cup. In the absence of wicketkeeper-batsman MS
Dhoni, Kumble's boys is ready to take on the Lankan's who are invincible on
the home soil. Before leaving for Colombo, skipper Kumble expressed
confidence of making difference this time as he feels his side, though faced
disappointment in last two ODI tournament, has performed constantly well in
longer version of the game.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, high on confidence after tremendous victory
over Indians in Asia cup, is looking forward to maintain its track record
against the neighbors on home ground. Skipper Mahela Jayawardhane feels
playing against India is always a big challenge for the side. He made his
test debut against India in 1997 and has a consistent career so far.
He asserts every time India and Srilanka played together, spectators have
witnessed good cricket as both sides have quality players.
India has toured Sri Lanka four times and except in 1993, they have
been badly crushed. Even in 1985 when Sri Lanka were a minnow and India, the
strongest cricket playing nation, faced humiliation with a 1-0 defeat.
Thanks to Manoj Prabhakar who bowled exceptionally well and helped India to
register the only series win in Sri Lnaka. However, both the side has
played 26 test altogether out of which India has resister phenomenal
success winning 10 and loosing just three matches.
One of the factor that account for poor performance of any team in Lankan
soil is the adverse whether condition. Its too hot humid there which soak
everything from one's body. Players have been often seen vomiting and
fainting on field. This was a reason that team India did a rigorous practice
in Chennai to adopt the weather and get accustomed to the playing condition.
Hope the practice bears fruit for India.
With young blood, Gautam Gambhir, Pragyan Ojha and Ishant Sharma, in the
team who are always ready to fire and inform senior players, Dravid,
Sachin, Sourav, Laxman and skipper Kumble himself, India has a balance team
and only thing requisite is sheer commitment and strong determination to
overcome the Lankan's challenge.
