Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly

The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly was formed for the first time on 1 April, 1937 under the Government of India Act, 1935. Initially the strength of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly was limited to 228 members. The tenure of the assembly is 5 years until and unless there is any need for sudden change. The first assembly session was conducted on 3 November, 1947.

The strength of the U.P. Legislative Assembly was revised to 431 and was later raised to 426. The composition of the assembly underwent several changes and it was reorganized on 9 November 2000. Finally, it was decided that the assembly can allow 404 members including one nominated member from the Anglo-Indian community. Presently, the Governor of the state is Shri T.V. Rajeshwar. The Chief Minister of U.P. is Ms. Mayawati. The Speaker in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly is Shri Sukhdeo Rajbhar. The Dy Speaker of the assembly is Shri Rajesh Agrawal. The leader of opposition in the house is Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The last Uttar Pradesh Assembly Election was held in 2007. BSP won the election with 206 seats defeating Samajwadi Party. Samajwadi Party won 97 seats. The BJP won 51 seats and INC could manage only 22 seats. The election was conducted in the months of April-May. The exit polls had suggested Bahujan Samaj Party would win the election with 110 to 160 seats. However it exceeded expectations and won 206 seats.

In the 2002 Uttar Pradesh State Assembly Election, SP secured 143 seats and won the election. The BSP had followed up with 98 seats and the BJP could earn 88 seats. It was assumed that BSP would come out in flying colors as the party had the capacity to draw the votes of the Brahmin's even though the party is dominated by the Dalit section. So, assembly election in Uttar Pradesh is all about a tough contest between SP and BSP.
