Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly

Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly is into its 13th term. The last assembly election was conducted on 8th May 2006. The results were declared on 11th May of the same year and the new constitution was framed on the very next day, 12th May 2006. The assembly is headed by the present Chief Minister, Hon. Kalaignar M. Karunanithi. The House is chaired by the speaker, Hon. Thiru R. Avudaiappan and Deputy Speaker, Hon. Thiru V.P. Duraisamy in the absence of the speaker. Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly functions through various committees like Committee on Estimates, Committee on Public Undertakings, Business Advisory Committee, Committee on Privileges, House Committee, Library Committee and so on.

Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has already summoned the House seven times in its 13th term. The second session was pretty long and it continued for 31 days. Budget was presented on July 2006 and March 2007. DMK is presently enjoying quite a favorable party position in the assembly and the party is represented by 95 members in Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. The next major party is AIADMK with 60 members. INC is represented by 35 members. The other significant political parties are Pattali Makkal Katchi or PMK, CPI(M), CPI, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi or VCK, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam or MDMK etc. Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly is presently having 235 MLAs including the speaker, one nominated member and one independent candidate.

DMK won in 96 constituencies in the assembly poll of 2006. AIADMK got the second position with a victory in 61 constituencies. INC managed to win in 34 constituencies. Interestingly, Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has always witnessed the dominance of the local political parties and not the national political ones. J. Jayalalithaa, the opposition leader has always posed a threat to the prospect of DMK. AIADMK came to power in the year 2001 and it was replaced by DMK in 2006. This implies a tough contest between the two parties and it is really hard to predict which one is coming to power in the 14th term. The term will come to an end in 2011. We can expect an exciting election phase in Tamil Nadu after the completion of the 13th term. DMK alliance is comprised of DMK, Congress, PMK, CPIM, CPI and Muslim League while AIADMK is a combination of AIADMK, MDMK, DPI and INL. Both the DMK and AIADMK underwent several changes as far as the party compositions go. In spite of the several splits, both the parties get counted as the major powers in the state since 1967.
