The Haryana state was formed on 1 November 1966 out of the territory of Punjab under the influence of the Punjab Reorganization Act, 1966. This was the same day, the Haryana Legislative Assembly came into existence. Right from its inception the Haryana Legislative Assembly is unicameral. Initially the Legislative Assembly of Haryana had 54 seats in total. Out of the total strength, 10 seats were reserved for the Scheduled Caste candidates. On March 1967, the strength of the members was raised to 81. In 1977, the Haryana Legislative Assembly strength was further raised to 90, out of which 17 seats were reserved. There is no seat for nominated member.

The tenure for the Haryana Legislative Assembly is 5 years until and unless there is any need for change. There are as many as 12 permanent Committees in the Haryana Legislative Assembly house. The Vidhan Bhawan building is shared by Legislative Assemblies of both Haryana and Punjab. The Chamber which was initially in use by the Punjab Legislative Council is now used by the Haryana Legislative Assembly. Presently, the Governor of Haryana is Dr. A.R. Kidwai. The Hon’ble Speaker of the house is Dr. Raghuvir Singh Kadian and Azad Mohammad is the Hon’ble Deputy Speaker. The Hon'ble Chief Minister of Haryana state is Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
Presently, Indian National Congress is enjoying a favorable party position in the House with 65 seats. In the last Haryana Assembly elections, the independents could manage to secure the second position in the house with 10 seats. The INLD won 9 seats and the BJP could not manage more than 2 seats in the Haryana Vidhan Sabha elections. Haryana went to the polls in 2005. This election marked the first clash between the emerging coalition party UPA and the BJP- led NDA.
