Goa Legislative Assembly

The Goa Legislative Assembly has got a unicameral structure. According to the Government of Union Territory Act of 1963, the strength of the Legislative Assembly of Goa, Daman and Diu was restricted to 30 members though the Union Government could nominate 3 more members. The first session of the Goa, Daman and Diu Legislative Assembly took place on 9 January, 1964. After Goa was provided statehood and Daman and Diu territories were de-linked, the strength of the Goa Assembly was reduced to 31. Presently Goa Legislative Assembly is allowed to accommodate 40 members.

The usual tenure for the Goa Legislative Assembly is 5 years unless there is any emergency. The legislative assembly functions through the activities of 11 committees. The new building of the Goa Legislative Assembly houses the Assembly Block, VIP Block and the Secretariat Block. The Assembly Hall features Audio and Video archival systems, digital microphone systems and automatic vote recorders along with connectivity arrangements to conduct e-legislative activities. Presently, the speaker of the house is Shri. Pratapsingh Raoji Rane. The post of the Deputy Speaker is held by Shri. Mauvin Godinho. Shri. R Kothandaraman is the assembly Secretary. Shri. S C Jamir is the Governor of the state and Shri. Digambar Kamat is the Chief Minister.

The Legislative Assembly of Goa comprises of 40 members. Goa state is represented by 28- 30 candidates and the others represent Daman and Diu. Like the other assemblies of the country, the Goa Legislative Assembly also features the ruling party and the opposition party where the ruling party forms the government and is headed by the Chief Minister. As per the rule, the party with the maximum votes in the Goa assembly elections forms the government. In case where a single party fails to collect the maximum votes, several parties join together and a coalition Government is formed.

The last assembly elections in Goa took place on 2nd June' 2007. The party to celebrate its win was the Indian National Congress (INC). They won 16 seats in the house followed by BJP with 14 seats. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) managed to win 3 seats and the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak (MG) and Save Goa Front (SGF) got 2 seats each. The United Goans Democratic Party (UGDP) could manage only 1 seat to its credit.
