New Delhi: The BJP today charged the Congress led UPA government of not providing strong evidence against the Students Islamic Republic of India (SIMI) before the Delhi High Court Tribunal and said that it did so deliberately to appease the Samajwadi Party (SP). "The inability of the government to furnish 'fresh' evidence to the Delhi High Court Tribunal raises serious doubts about the intent of the government to fight terror in such pressing times," said BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy.

"The government did not produce strong evidence against the SIMI deliberately. Moving the Supreme Court after the decision of the Tribunal is a course correction, the way it happened with Ram Sethu, just after the trust vote," he added.

Rudy said that the Ram Sethu affidavit was filed in the Supreme Court to appease the DMK while the government did not produce strong evidence before the Tribunal against SIMI to appease SP. "All the evidence produced before the Tribunal on SIMI activities were of 2001. SIMI activities have multiplied post 2001," Rudy said.

"On April 23 2008, Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal had given a statement in the Lok Sabha whereby he accepted that SIMI has links with LET and more than 75,000 activists were arrested for their involvement in anti-national activities," Rudy added.

The BJP also demanded sacking of delinquent Home Minister Shivraj Patil and the party also said that the Prime Minister is the beneficiary of all these activities.
