New Delhi: The Railway Ministry is mulling the review of routes for the Dedicated Freight Corridor Project as too many flyovers, rail over-bridges and other constructions are coming in the way. According to the feasibility report on the proposed first phase of the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata route, as many as 78 constructions need to be removed for laying the dedicated lines. "We have received a report from the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd (DFCCIL) which has mentioned about the existing flyovers and rail over-bridges in the proposed route. We are examining the report and a decision to remove them or changing the route will be taken shortly," a senior Rail Ministry official said.
The proposed rail route will run parallel to the Golden Quadrilateral, connecting the four metros. The DFCIL, set up for implementing the freight corridor project, has got inputs from the RITES about the existing flyovers, over-bridges and railway stations which are to be removed for laying the dedicated tracks. Railways expects to carry more than 1,100 metric tonne of freight traffic by the end of 11th Five-year Plan. Development of dedicated corridor for carrying additional traffic has become necessary in view of high growth in demand. The high density network connecting the four metros - Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai - known as Golden Quadrilateral, has got saturated at most locations. (PTI)
